Free Printable Good Behavior Certificate Template

A behavior certificate works or fails on one line: the reason. “For good behavior” is a sticker with extra steps. “For sitting with the new boy at lunch every day this week” is a thing a seven-year-old will carry around the house and read out to their gsandmother. Same paper, same two minutes, completely different object.

When to use it

Friday afternoon in a classroom. The end of a term when a child has quietly held it together. A reward chart that finally filled up. At home, for the week somebody stopped fighting with their brother. It works for ages four to about eleven — past that, children can tell when an award is for being convenient, and the certificate has to name something real or it lands badly.

Two rules. Spell the name exactly right; children notice, and it is the first thing they look at. And hand it over in front of somebody — the class, a parent, anyone. An award left on a desk is a piece of paper. An award given out loud is a memory.

Behavior, effort or achievement?

Different children need different ones, which is why it is worth keeping all three to hand. This one is about how they treat other people. The certificate of effort is for the child who is trying hard and not yet getting there — the most useful award in the set. The certificate of excellence is for a result. Give out all three in the same assembly and nobody has to be the child who never gets called.

How it works

Printing a set for the class

Type the first name and the first reason, download, change both, download again. The design and the signature line stay put, so each one is two fields and a click. If you are doing the whole class, write the thirty reasons first on a scrap of paper — that is the part that takes the thinking, and doing it in one sitting keeps them from all sounding the same.

Print at 100% scale, not “fit to page”, or the border will shift. Landscape orientation, and the paper size you downloaded — A4 outside the United States, US Letter inside it. Card of 160 to 200 gsm survives a backpack; ordinary printer paper does not.

Editable in PowerPoint and Word

If you want the school logo, a class mascot or a second signature for the teaching assistant, download the editable file instead. Questions

What should I write as the reason?
Something you actually watched happen, in the child’s own scale of things: helping without being asked, telling the truth when it was hard, being patient with somebody who is slower. Avoid “being good” — it is the one wording that makes a child suspect the award is about keeping them quiet.

Should everyone get one eventually?
Over a term, yes, and it is worth planning it that way. Every child does something worth naming; the work is noticing it, not distributing awards evenly at the end.

Can I use it at home?
Yes. Free for personal use with no watermark and no account. Plenty of people print these for a reward chart, a chore streak or a week without a bedtime argument.

Will it print in black and white?
Yes. Pick the ink saver version before downloading and it is designed for a mono printer — useful when it is thirty copies on the school photocopier.

Which paper size should I pick?
US Letter in the United States and Canada, A4 almost everywhere else. If you are unsure, check what is loaded in your printer.
