Excellence is the highest bar of the three, and the only one whose value comes from how seldom you hand it out. An achievement certificate marks something finished. An effort certificate marks something attempted. This one says: of everyone doing this, your work set the standard — and that sentence is only true if it is not said to everybody.

What to write on it

Name the subject and the standard, not the child’s character. Excellence belongs to a domain:

• “Excellence in Mathematics — Year 4, 2026”
• “For the highest standard of written work in the class this year”
• “Excellence in Science — for work consistently beyond what was asked”

The word that does the real work is consistently. One brilliant project is an achievement; a year of them is excellence. Saying which one you mean is what stops the certificate from being interchangeable with the other two.

Why scarcity is the whole mechanism

If every child in the room gets one, it has quietly become a participation certificate in a nicer font — and the children who genuinely earned it know that before the adults do. The usual model that survives contact with a real classroom is one per subject per year group, awarded at the end of the year and named in front of everyone.

That scarcity is also what makes it worth keeping. Parents frame these. Children remember which subject it was in twenty years’ time.

Which one do you actually need?

Three certificates, three different claims:

• Excellence — this one. The standard was the highest.
• Achievement — something was accomplished: certificate of achievement for kids.
• Effort — something hard was attempted and stuck with: certificate of effort.

For the weekly rotation, use student of the week — that one is meant to go round the class, and excellence is not.

Questions

How many should we give out?
Few. One per subject per year group is the model most schools land on. The moment the number grows to fit the class rather than the work, the award stops meaning anything — and it cannot be un-devalued later.

What is the difference between excellence and achievement?
Achievement is about a thing done: a level finished, a project completed, a goal reached. Excellence is about the standard of the work compared with everyone else’s. A child can achieve a great deal without their work being the best in the room, and both deserve paper — just not the same paper.

Can we award it for behaviour rather than academic work?
Yes, and it works well for things like leadership or citizenship, as long as you name the standard: “Excellence in looking after the younger children”. What does not work is using it as a general good-child award, because then it competes with every other certificate you give.
