Free Printable Most Improved Player Certificate Template

Most Improved is the award coaches remember giving. MVP usually goes to the player everyone could already see. This one goes to the player who started the season unable to do something and ended it doing it — which takes a year of turning up, and is the harder thing.

When to use it

End of season, alongside the other awards. It is worth handing out second, not last: given at the end it can sound like a runner-up prize, and it is not one.

Name the distance. “Went from the back of every run to leading the warm-up”, “could not swim a length in September and swam the relay leg in June”. Without a specific line, “most improved” carries an unfortunate second meaning — that they were bad before. With one, it becomes the story of a year.

Most improved, MVP or participation?

Three awards, one night, three different jobs. The MVP certificate is for the standout. This one is for the distance travelled. The participation certificate is for everyone who finished the season, which for most of a squad is the whole and honest story.

Printing it well

Questions

How do I word it so it does not sound like an insult?
Write forwards, not backwards. Describe where they got to and what it took, not where they started. “Trained every week without missing one, and it showed” works. “Improved a lot from a difficult start” does not.

Should the player know it is coming?
Not usually — but a quiet word to the parent beforehand is worth it. This is the award most likely to be met with confusion in the moment and appreciated properly on the drive home.

Can we give it to more than one player?
In a large squad, yes — one per age group works well. Within a single team, one is better: the award means “the most”, and giving three of them empties it out.

Is it really free?
