Teachers get mugs. What they keep is the words — the note that named the thing they actually did, tucked in a drawer and read again years later. A certificate is the only gift on the list that can carry that, so the design matters far less than the sentence you put in the middle of it.

What to write on it

Name one specific thing. “For the way you got Marcus reading when nobody else could” is worth keeping; “for your dedication and hard work” is a greetings card. If you cannot think of anything specific, ask the child — they will tell you in one sentence, and it will be better than yours.

If it comes from a whole class, print it, hand it round and have every child sign the back. It takes ten minutes and turns one sheet of paper into the thing that goes on the classroom wall for the rest of the year.

When to use it

Teacher Appreciation Week runs from 4 to 8 May in 2026, with Teacher Appreciation Day on Tuesday the 5th — that is the obvious moment, and the one everybody plans for. The better ones are unplanned: the last day of term, a teacher leaving mid-year, a retirement, the day after a class trip nobody wanted to chaperone, the end of a hard year.

And not only teachers. The teaching assistant who does half the work, the office staff who know every parent’s name, the librarian, the bus driver, the coach who stayed late all season. If you want neutral wording that fits any of them, the general certificate of appreciation works better; for parent helpers and PTA volunteers, use volunteer recognition.

What do you write when it is from the whole class?
Keep the printed line general and let the children make it personal on the back — one sentence each, signed. Trying to represent thirty children in one sentence produces the greetings-card wording every time.

Should it come from a parent or from the school?
Both work and they read differently. From the school, sign it as head teacher and it becomes recognition. From a family, sign it with the child’s name and it becomes a thank-you — which is usually the one they keep.

Can I add the school logo?
Not in the browser version, which keeps the layout fixed so nothing shifts when you print a set. Download the PowerPoint or Word file and drop the logo in there.

Is it really free?
