Kindergarten graduation is the first ceremony most people ever attend, and the graduates take it completely seriously. That is worth matching: the certificate is not a joke about tiny caps, it is the first time a child is handed a piece of paper with their own name on it in front of a room full of adults.

What to write on it

Two sentences do the whole job: what they finished, and what comes next. “Has graduated from Sunflower Kindergarten and is ready for first grade” is the standard, and it works because a five-year-old understands both halves of it.

If you have time for one personal line per child, that is what parents keep. “For being the one who always helped tidy up”, “for learning every single letter”. Thirty of those take an evening and they get read aloud at home for years.

Getting the ceremony right

• Check the spelling of every name against the register, nicknames included. This is the one detail parents notice from the third row.
• Print them a week early. The morning of the ceremony is not when you want to discover the printer is out of cyan.
• Read the name out as you hand it over. The paper is the souvenir; being called by name is the moment.
• Leave the date visible. In fifteen years that is the part that makes the photograph make sense.

When it is not kindergarten

For preschool and nursery, change the wording to the school’s own name and to whatever comes next — the layout is the same. For older students, from elementary through high school and college, the graduation certificate has formal wording and a more sober design.
