Free Printable Certificate of Effort Template for Kids

Most certificates go to the child who was fastest, neatest or first. This one is for the other twenty-eight: the child who rewrote the page after it smudged, who kept putting a hand up after getting it wrong twice, who came last in the race and still finished it. That is a harder thing to do than winning, and it almost never gets a piece of paper.

What to write on it

Name what they did, not how hard they tried. “For trying your best” is the phrase every child has heard a hundred times and stopped hearing. Compare:

• “For rewriting your whole story after the first page got wet”
• “For asking for help three times until it made sense”
• “For practising the same piece every week since September”

The difference matters more than it looks. A specific line tells the child exactly which behaviour earned the paper, which is the behaviour you would like to see again. A vague one just says somebody felt sorry for them.

The trap to avoid

Do not give an effort certificate to a child who found the task easy. It reads as “I did not expect much from you”, and children hear that instantly — usually before the adult notices what they said.

And do not hand these out in the same breath as the winners’ awards. A room full of children can tell the difference between a real award and a consolation prize awarded in the second half of the ceremony. Give effort certificates on their own day, for their own reason, and they stop being a runner-up medal.

Which one do you actually need?

This one is for the process — the trying, the sticking with it, the coming back after a bad week. For a thing accomplished, use the certificate of achievement for kids. For the weekly classroom award, student of the week; for books finished, the reading award certificate.

Questions

Is an effort certificate just a participation award?
No, and the wording is what separates them. A participation certificate says you were there. An effort certificate names something the child chose to do that was hard for them. One is attendance, the other is character.

Should every child get one eventually?
Over a year, most will earn one honestly — but not on the same day, and not because it is their turn. The moment it becomes a rota, the children work out that it means nothing.

Can I print one for the whole class?
