Nurses get pizza in the break room once a year. What almost nobody gives them is the specific sentence — the one that names what they did on a particular shift, signed by someone whose name they know. A certificate is a cheap way to do the thing that actually lands.

When to use it

National Nurses Week runs from 6 to 12 May, ending on International Nurses Day — 12 May, Florence Nightingale’s birthday, the same date every year. That is the obvious moment and the one every hospital plans for.

The rest of the year is where these count more: the end of a preceptorship, a nurse leaving the unit, a graduation from a residency programme, a retirement after thirty years, or the week after something went badly and the team held. Certificates given at those moments are the ones that end up in a locker door.

What to write on it

Name the shift, the patient situation or the trait — not the profession. “For the night in February when you stayed four hours past the end of your shift with the Ramirez family” is worth keeping. “In appreciation of your dedication to nursing” is a poster.

Two practical notes. Sign it as someone who works alongside them, not only as administration — a charge nurse’s signature carries more than a director’s. And check the credentials after the name: RN, BSN, MSN, NP. Getting those wrong on a certificate about respect is an unforced error.

The rest of the team

If you are recognising the whole department rather than nurses specifically — techs, therapists, porters, reception, housekeeping — the medical certificate of appreciation has neutral wording that fits any of them. For finishing a course or a rotation, use the medical certificate of completion instead: appreciation and completion are different claims and should not be mixed on one sheet.
